Learn how to pamper people, enhance their beauty and give them a relaxing experience. The New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4) will teach you how to deliver a range of beauty services for nails, skin and makeup. You will also learn business aspects of beauty therapy, customer service and sales.

You will learn:

  • natural nail services, products, and tools,
  • beauty treatment plans
  • facial and skin care services
  • manual hair removal
  • body care services
  • chemistry, physics and biology
  • nutrition
  • skin-related disease and disorders
  • health, safety and hygiene obligations
  • small business and customer service

iTEC international examinations can be undertaken as part of this course at an additional cost.

This qualification is designed to provide the beauty sector with therapists who have the skills and knowledge to analyse, plan and provide a broad range of beauty services. This course is intended for learners who have little or no prior learning or experience in beauty services. 

     
     

In this programme students will learn to:

CBT400 Anatomy and Physiology

  • Identify systems of the human body, organs and general functions as relevant to beauty services.

CBT410 Consultation

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the consultation process, identify the client’s wants and needs to develop a treatment plan.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a treatment plan and product needs.
  • In relation to the beauty services industry, maintain a professional working relationship with clients, other therapists, other students, and other medical professionals.

CBT420 Dermatology

  • Identify symptoms of skin and skin related diseases and disorders.
  • Identify the possible implications in terms of beauty treatments.

CBT430 Health, Safety and Hygiene

  • Demonstrate knowledge of personal care, hygiene and safety in a salon.
  • Maintain safe and professional practice within the beauty workplace.
  • Provide first aid and provide basic life support.

CBT440 Manicure and Pedicure

  • Prepare to perform a manicure service; and perform a complete manicure service.
  • Prepare to perform a pedicure service; and perform a complete pedicure service.
  • Prepare for a complimentary nail service; and perform a complimentary nail service.

CBT450 Nutrition

  • Demonstrate knowledge of nutrition in relation to beauty therapy services; and nutritional advice in relation to supporting skin care services.

CBT460 Reception

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the receptionist role and functions for the beauty industry.
  • Demonstrate communication skills for customer service and client sales in the beauty industry; and maintain a beauty industry reception area.

CBT470 Small Business

  • In relation to the beauty services industry; explain types of business, Acts and Regulations affecting businesses, the operation of a small business and customer practice.

CBT480 Facial and Makeup Services

  • Demonstrate knowledge of skin types and skin conditions relevant to product and service selection for facial therapy services.
  • Prepare for selected facial therapy services.
  • Perform a cleansing and toning service, an exfoliation service, a facial massage sequence, a mask application, and moisturising services; and complete follow-up actions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of products and techniques used for eye enhancement services; prepare to perform and perform eye enhancement services; and complete follow-up actions.
  • Conduct a client consultation to determine make-up selection; and perform make-up services

CBT490 Body Care Services

  • Demonstrate knowledge of hair growth patterns, stages of growth and hair types relevant for depilatory services; perform depilatory wax services; and complete follow-up actions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of self-tanning techniques, perform a full body self-tanning treatment; and complete follow-up actions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of foundation relaxation massage practice; describe the effects of, and contraindications to, foundation relaxation massage; perform a foundation relaxation massage of the back, neck and shoulders; and complete follow-up actions

Graduates of this qualification may be employed in positions such as:

  • Beauty therapist
  • Cosmetic product company representative.

 

Entry requirements

To apply, you’ll need:

  • NCEA Level 1 or an equivalent qualification
  • NCEA Level 2 is recommended, but is not required.

All enrolments will be considered upon application.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, or your previous education was not taught in English, you’ll need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

You can meet this requirement through one of the following:

  • NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance
  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A Level where teaching and assessment were completed in English
  • CELTA or CertTESOL
  • Completion of primary education (equivalent to New Zealand Years 1 to 8) plus at least three years of secondary education taught in English in New Zealand, Australia,
  • Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • At least five years of secondary education taught in English in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • Completion of a tertiary qualification taught in English from a tertiary education provider in one of the countries listed above. This includes a bachelor’s degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, bachelor honours degree, postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, master’s degree or doctoral degree
  • An approved English language proficiency test that meets the requirements below

English language test requirements

For this Level 4 certificate, accepted test requirements include:

  • IELTS General or Academic: 5.5 overall, with no band below 5.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 46, with a writing score of 14
  • TOEFL pBT: 530, with TWE 4.5
  • PTE Academic: 42, with no band below 36
  • Cambridge English: B2 First or B2 First for Schools, score 162, with no skill below 15
  • OET: Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL: Level 3 Academic (expiring) or Level 3 Applied (current)
  • LanguageCert: B2 Communicator International ESOL Written (LRW) Pass, with at least 25/50 in each skill, and Spoken (S) Pass
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II, with at least a Pass in each band

English language test scores must be achieved in a single test within the two years before enrolment.

To satisfactorily complete the New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4), and be awarded this qualification the student must successfully achieve:

  • A minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4)
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy full-time over one year or part-time over two years

Please Note: Students failing to attend for 80% of the timetabled programme hours may forfeit Zero Fees entitlement.
